Study Strategy
Start with logical inference and direct inference as the conceptual foundation. These two topics establish the core principle: a valid inference is the conclusion that the passage makes necessary, not merely possible. Once this distinction is internalized, move to avoiding unsupported inference and eliminating extreme inference choices, which are the two most important meta-skills for eliminating wrong answers.
After mastering these core skills, study the inference-from-signals cluster: inference from contrast, inference from transitions, inference from tone, and inference from concession. These topics teach you to use specific textual cues as inference triggers. Then work through the genre-specific topics (science, history, literature, social science) to understand how inference cues present differently in different passage types.

Common Mistakes
Making inferences that require multiple logical steps. Valid SAT inferences are one step from the evidence. If reaching a conclusion requires "A causes B, B causes C, therefore A causes C," that is over-inferring. The SAT rewards conclusions that follow immediately and directly from what is stated.
Choosing answers that are possible rather than required. The most common inference error is selecting an answer that could be true given the passage rather than an answer that must be true. If the passage merely makes a conclusion possible but does not require it, that conclusion is unsupported.
Importing outside knowledge. Students frequently choose inferences that are true in the real world but not grounded in the passage. A passage about bees does not support any inference about bee behavior that it does not describe, regardless of what the student knows about bees.
Selecting extreme or absolute answers. Wrong answers in inference questions frequently use language stronger than the passage justifies: "proves," "always," "never," "all," "completely." The correct answer almost always uses qualified language: "suggests," "implies," "is likely," "tends to."
Confusing inference from contrast with the opposite position. When a passage uses contrast language ("however"), students sometimes infer that the author completely rejects the first idea. Contrast signals introduce a qualification or counter-position, not necessarily a full reversal.
Exam Tips
Before selecting an inference answer, ask yourself: "If this inference were wrong, would anything in the passage contradict it?" A valid inference is one that the passage makes necessary. If the passage could still be true even if your conclusion were false, the inference is probably unsupported.
Eliminate any inference answer choice that uses absolute language ("always," "never," "proves," "completely," "all") unless the passage itself uses such language. The SAT rarely provides sufficient textual evidence to justify absolute conclusions, so these choices are almost always wrong.
For inference-from-tone questions, use the 2-axis system: identify whether the author's attitude is positive or negative (first axis) and whether it is strong or mild (second axis). This gives you four quadrants: strong positive (admiration), mild positive (appreciation), mild negative (skepticism), strong negative (criticism). Match the quadrant to the answer choice with the most aligned language.
The distinction between "most likely" and "must be true" inference questions matters for strategy. "Most likely" questions reward the best-supported conclusion among plausible options; "must be true" or "necessarily implies" questions require the conclusion that the passage makes logically necessary. For "must be true" questions, the bar is higher: eliminate any choice that the passage does not require.
In science passage inference questions, never infer from a study's findings to a general universal claim unless the passage explicitly supports generalization. A study on a specific population supports inferences about that population, not about all populations.
