Introduction

Multi-Source Reasoning (MSR) presents information across two or three tabbed pages that test-takers must navigate to answer a set of three related questions. Each tab may contain a business email, a memo, a data table, a chart, a text passage, or a combination of these. The question set draws on information from one, two, or all three tabs, requiring the test-taker to synthesize information across sources rather than read a single self-contained passage.

In case competitions, consulting engagements, and business school courses, decision-makers rarely have all relevant information in one place.

Build a tab map in the first 60-90 seconds: note in 3-5 words what each tab contains (e.g., "Tab 1: sales memo from Q3; Tab 2: regional revenue table; Tab 3: analyst summary"). This map eliminates tab-switching during question answering and replaces it with targeted retrieval.

Common Mistake

Do not assume that information on one tab is consistent with information on another tab. Multi-source questions frequently present contradictions across tabs and test whether the reader notices them. A question may ask which tab's information should be used to resolve a discrepancy, or may ask whether a claim is supported, contradicted, or not addressable given the combined sources.

Study Strategy

MSR requires integrating reading comprehension skills with data analysis skills. Practice by reading sets of two or three related short documents and identifying: (1) what new information each document adds, (2) what information is consistent across documents, and (3) where documents conflict.

The most efficient approach during the exam is to read each tab in order before looking at any question, creating a brief mental map of each tab's content and type. Then answer the three questions by returning to relevant tabs rather than re-reading all tabs for every question.

For question types within MSR: some questions are pure inference (requiring logical conclusions from one or two tabs), some are calculation (requiring numerical data from possibly different tabs), and some are evaluation (asking whether a claim is supported, refuted, or cannot be determined from the given sources). Practice recognizing question types quickly from the stem and adjusting your source navigation accordingly.

Common Mistakes

Treating each tab as a standalone passage: MSR questions specifically reward integration. A calculation question may require a rate from Tab 1 and a quantity from Tab 2. Reading only one tab produces an incorrect answer even if the tab is read correctly.

Accepting information at face value without cross-checking: The GMAT sometimes presents scenarios where Tab 1 states one thing and Tab 2 implicitly contradicts it. Questions test whether you notice the contradiction and reason about it correctly.

Over-reading details in all tabs: Not every fact in every tab is relevant to any specific question. Selective reading of the retrieved tab section (using the tab map to navigate) is faster than re-reading everything.

Confusing "cannot be determined" with "the evidence is ambiguous": If the tabs provide enough information to reach a definitive conclusion, "cannot be determined" is wrong even if the reasoning requires combining two tabs. "Cannot be determined" is correct only if the relevant data is simply not present in any tab.

Exam Tips

Read all tabs before answering any question. The investment pays off because the same source material generates three questions. Understanding the full scope of information available before answering prevents misapplication and reduces tab-switching time per question.

Use the question type to direct your tab navigation. If the question asks for a calculation using a specific metric, go directly to the tab that contains numerical data. If it asks about the perspective of a person mentioned in an email, go to the email tab. Targeted retrieval is faster than sequential re-reading.

For "supported / not supported / cannot be determined" question formats, evaluate each answer option independently against the combined source material. "Supported" requires positive evidence in the tabs. "Not supported" means the claim is absent or contradicted. "Cannot be determined" means the tabs neither confirm nor deny. This three-way distinction appears frequently in MSR.

When two tabs conflict, consider whether the scenario provides a reason to treat one as more authoritative (more recent, from a more reliable source, official vs. informal). If no hierarchy is established, treat the conflict as the question's focal point.

Memory Trick

For each MSR set, before question 1: write three short tab labels (Tab 1 = X, Tab 2 = Y, Tab 3 = Z). For each question: identify question type (inference, calculation, evaluation), identify which tab(s) are relevant, retrieve targeted information, and answer. This structured approach prevents the most common MSR time sink: undirected re-reading.
