Agreement and Disagreement Questions

Agreement questions ask what both scientists would acknowledge or accept. Look for information presented in the introductory paragraph (which both viewpoints are built on) and for premises that both viewpoints explicitly share even while they disagree about the explanation.

Disagreement questions ask what specifically divides the viewpoints. The disagreement is usually about mechanism (how/why something happens), not about the phenomenon itself (that it happens). Both scientists typically agree on the observations; they disagree on what causes or explains them.

On agreement questions, do not select an answer that represents one scientist's unique position -- it must be something both would accept. On disagreement questions, do not select the general topic of the passage (e.g., "whether climate change is real") if both scientists accept the phenomenon but disagree about mechanism. The answer must identify the specific point where their explanations diverge.

Evidence and Prediction Questions

Evidence questions ask which viewpoint a described piece of new evidence would support or contradict. To answer: determine what the evidence shows (its direction and what variable it relates to), then evaluate each viewpoint's prediction about that variable or relationship. The evidence supports the viewpoint whose prediction matches what the evidence shows; it contradicts the viewpoint whose prediction is the opposite.

Prediction questions ask what a specific scientist would predict about an untested scenario. To answer: apply the scientist's stated mechanism to the new scenario. What does the mechanism imply about what should happen in the new conditions? Choose the answer that follows logically from that mechanism.

Study Strategy

Begin with understanding the passage structure: one introductory paragraph of shared context, followed by two or more viewpoints, each with a claim, evidence, and mechanism. Practice identifying these elements in each viewpoint before moving to questions.

Next, practice the mental summary strategy: after reading each viewpoint, state in one sentence what the scientist claims and why. This takes 30-60 seconds and makes all subsequent questions much faster.

Study agreement and disagreement question types together. Practice identifying shared premises by checking whether a statement appears in the introduction or is something both scientists explicitly accept. Practice finding disagreements by comparing the mechanisms of two viewpoints directly.

Study evidence and prediction questions next. These require extending each viewpoint's logic to new information, which is the highest-reasoning task in this unit. Practice by taking a viewpoint's mechanism and asking "what would this mechanism predict about X?"

Cover the remaining topics (identifying assumptions, theory comparison, model comparison) as a final cluster. These appear in harder questions and require the same core skills applied at a slightly higher level of abstraction.
