Study Strategy
Begin with claims and support as the conceptual anchor, since all other topics in this unit build on understanding the relationship between assertions and evidence. Once you can reliably distinguish strong from weak evidence in plain text passages, move to evidence precision, which introduces the precision hierarchy and the concept of scope-matching. These two topics together establish the framework for selecting the best supporting quotation.
Next, study evidence that strengthens a claim and evidence that weakens a claim as a pair. Understanding both directions of the evidence-claim relationship prepares you for questions that ask you to evaluate whether new information supports or challenges a researcher's hypothesis.
Then work through the quantitative sub-topics: graph-supported claims, table-supported claims, comparing textual and numerical evidence, and reasoning from data. These require a specific skill set (reading axes, checking units, limiting conclusions to what is shown) that differs from pure text-based evidence evaluation. Practice the correlation-vs.-causation distinction explicitly, as the SAT tests it frequently.
Finally, review the discipline-specific topics (evidence in science passages, humanities, social science, paired passages) to build comfort with how different passage types frame claims and evidence differently.
Common Mistakes
Selecting evidence that is related to the topic but not to the specific claim. The SAT deliberately presents answer choices that discuss the same subject matter as the claim but address a different aspect of it. The claim might be about efficiency while an answer choice describes affordability. Both are relevant to the topic (solar panels) but only one addresses the claim. Always map the answer choice back to the exact elements of the claim.
Treating graph data as supporting conclusions about cause or mechanism. A graph that shows two variables moving together supports a correlation claim, not a causation claim. Students frequently select answers that add "which causes" or "which results from" language when the data only warrants "which is associated with." Check the verb in each answer choice carefully.
Choosing evidence that is true according to the passage but irrelevant to the specific question. Wrong answers in Command of Evidence questions are often accurate statements from the passage. Accuracy alone is not enough; the evidence must directly address the claim in the question.
Ignoring scope mismatches. If the claim is about a specific time period, population, or condition, evidence about a different scope does not provide precise support. An answer citing results from a different demographic or a different time frame is a scope mismatch.
Accepting partially-supported claims in quantitative questions. SAT answer choices for data questions sometimes mix one accurate observation with one inaccurate or unsupported claim. Both parts must be supported by the data for the choice to be correct.
Exam Tips
For any "which quotation best supports" question, underline the key claim terms before reading the answer choices. Then check each quotation by asking: "Does this quotation address ALL the underlined terms, not just one or two?" The choice that covers all key elements most specifically is correct.
Never use outside knowledge to support an answer in Command of Evidence questions. The SAT will include answer choices that are factually true in the real world but not supported by the passage or data provided. If you cannot point to specific text or data values that justify every part of an answer, eliminate it.
For graph and table questions, use the 4-step SCAN method: (1) read axis labels and units, (2) identify the range and scale, (3) note the overall trend, (4) check specific values. Only after completing SCAN should you read the answer choices. This prevents you from misreading scales under time pressure.
Evidence precision questions operate on a four-level hierarchy: precise evidence targets all elements of the claim with specific matching details; general evidence supports the claim but lacks specificity; tangential evidence is related to the topic but does not address the claim; irrelevant evidence has no bearing on the claim. On the SAT, the wrong choices are almost always at the general or tangential level, never irrelevant, because irrelevant choices are too easy to eliminate.
For evidence-strengthens/weakens questions, first identify the exact claim being made, then ask: "What kind of information would confirm this claim?" and "What kind of information would contradict it?" This pre-framing narrows your evaluation of the four choices significantly.
