Introduction
Critical Reasoning questions make up approximately 30-40% of the GMAT Verbal Reasoning section. Each question presents a short argument of 50-120 words and asks the test-taker to perform a specific logical operation on it: identify an assumption the argument requires, find information that strengthens or weakens the conclusion, evaluate what would help determine whether the argument is sound, identify a logical flaw, resolve an apparent paradox, or determine the method of reasoning used.

Every Critical Reasoning question type begins with the same foundational step: understand the argument's structure. What is the conclusion (the main claim)? What are the premises (the stated evidence)? What gap exists between the premises and the conclusion (the assumption)? Once this structure is mapped in 20-30 seconds, the question-specific strategy becomes straightforward. Most wrong answers in Critical Reasoning fail because the student answered the wrong argument or evaluated the wrong part of the argument.

For every Critical Reasoning question, identify the conclusion first. If you cannot state the conclusion in one sentence before looking at the answer choices, you are not ready to evaluate any answer choice. The conclusion is the linchpin; all other question-type strategies depend on it.
In weaken questions, many students select answers that attack the premises (the stated evidence), but premises in GMAT arguments are given as facts. The correct weaken answer attacks the logical connection between the premises and the conclusion, typically by attacking an assumption. If the answer says "The premise is false," that is usually wrong; if it says "Even if the premise is true, it does not lead to the conclusion," that is the right kind of thinking.
Study Strategy
Start with argument structure because it is the prerequisite for every question type in this unit. Practice labeling the conclusion, premises, and assumptions of short arguments before studying any individual question type. The skill of decomposing an argument in under 30 seconds separates students who score above 700 from those who plateau below it.
Next, study strengthen and weaken together because they are mirror operations. An answer that strengthens also provides the template for what would weaken (and vice versa): both hinge on identifying the logical gap between premises and conclusion. After these, assumption questions are natural because they require explicitly naming the gap rather than providing information that affects it.
Causal reasoning deserves dedicated practice because the GMAT features it heavily. Three common vulnerabilities: (1) the direction of causality may be reversed (B causes A rather than A causing B); (2) a third factor C may cause both A and B; (3) the correlation may be coincidental. Weaken and strengthen questions involving cause-and-effect arguments are resolved by addressing these three possibilities.
Statistical reasoning questions test a specific set of principles: is the sample representative? Is the comparison group appropriate? Is the absolute change being confused with the relative change? Practice recognizing these as distinct principles and applying them to statistical claims in arguments.
Common Mistakes
Arguing with the premises: The premises in a Critical Reasoning argument are given as facts. Do not select an answer that disputes a stated premise. The logical attack must come at the connection between premises and conclusion.
Scope errors: Selecting answers that are relevant to the topic but outside the argument's scope. The correct answer must affect the specific conclusion the argument makes, not a related claim.
Necessary vs. sufficient assumptions: Selecting an answer that would guarantee the conclusion (sufficient) when the question asks for what the argument requires (necessary). Necessary assumptions are often weaker statements that close the minimum logical gap.
Resolve-the-paradox errors: Selecting an answer that explains only one of the two contradictory facts. A correct resolution explains why both facts can be true at the same time.
Boldface misidentification: Labeling a counterargument as a main conclusion, or treating background information as a premise that supports the conclusion. Map the argument structure carefully before categorizing.
Exam Tips
Read the question stem before the argument. Knowing whether you are looking for a strengthener, weakener, assumption, or flaw determines what to look for while reading. This targeted reading is faster than reading the argument first and then re-reading it with the question in mind.
The negation test for necessary assumptions: Negate the candidate answer choice and ask whether the argument falls apart. If negating the answer destroys the argument, that answer is a necessary assumption. If negating it leaves the argument intact, it is not necessary. This test distinguishes necessary from merely supportive answers with precision.
For resolve-the-paradox questions, accept both contradictory facts as true and look for an answer that explains the mechanism making both facts possible simultaneously. Wrong answers typically address only one fact, are irrelevant to the paradox, or make the contradiction worse.
Use the 5-option elimination process efficiently. In Critical Reasoning, you can often eliminate two or three options quickly because they are (1) out of scope, (2) reverse the direction of the claim, or (3) affect a premise rather than the conclusion. Narrowing to two candidates before careful comparison is faster than evaluating all five individually.
Causal argument structure. When an argument claims that A causes B, the correct weaken answer typically does one of three things: (1) shows that B occurred without A, (2) shows that A occurred without B, or (3) provides an alternative explanation for why A and B occur together. These three attack patterns cover most causal weaken scenarios on the exam.
The negation test for necessary assumptions: take your candidate answer, negate it, and ask whether the argument still works. If the negation destroys the argument, the original statement is necessary. If the argument survives the negation, move on. This test works because necessary assumptions are the minimum conditions for the argument's validity; removing them makes the conclusion fail.
