Introduction
Parallel Reasoning Questions ask you to find, among five answer choices, the argument whose logical structure most closely mirrors the structure of the stimulus argument. The content is deliberately different; only the form must match. Parallel Flaw questions do the same with flawed arguments: find the answer choice that commits the same logical error, not merely a similar content-based error. Together these question types appear approximately 2 to 4 times per LSAT administration and are among the most time-intensive question types.

Use the conclusion as your first filter on answer choices. Read the stimulus conclusion, identify its type (normative, descriptive, predictive) and strength (certain, probable, possible). Eliminate any answer choice whose conclusion does not match this type and strength. This alone eliminates two to three wrong answers before you analyze a single premise.
Study Strategy
Begin by mastering logical abstraction on simple arguments before moving to complex parallel structures. Practice replacing content with variables until this feels natural.
Study the five most common parallel argument forms: (1) universal syllogism (All A are B; C is an A; therefore C is a B), (2) conditional chain (If A then B; if B then C; therefore if A then C), (3) disjunctive elimination (Either X or Y; not X; therefore Y), (4) analogical parallel (A and B are similar; A has property P; therefore B has property P), and (5) causal parallel (A caused B in situation 1; A is present in situation 2; therefore B will occur in situation 2).
Apply the two-stage elimination approach on test day: first filter by conclusion type and strength, then filter by logical form. This is faster than reading all five answer choices in full.
On Parallel Flaw questions, identify the specific type of flaw in the stimulus (illegal reversal, hasty generalization, false analogy, etc.) before looking at answer choices. Find the answer choice that commits the same type of flaw.
Parallel Reasoning questions are like matching shadows. Two different objects can cast identical shadows if they have the same shape. The objects (content) are different, but the shadows (logical form) are the same. Your job is to match shadows, not objects.
Common Mistakes
Matching content rather than structure. The most common error is selecting an answer choice about a similar topic (both about science, or both about policy) instead of finding structural similarity. Topic similarity is irrelevant. Two arguments about completely different subjects can be perfectly parallel if they have the same logical form.
Mismatching conclusion strength. If the stimulus concludes "X will happen," an answer that concludes "X might happen" is wrong even if everything else matches. Conclusion strength is one of the first things to check and eliminates many wrong answers quickly.
Ignoring argument validity. If the stimulus is a flawed argument (incorrect inference), the correct parallel must also be a flawed argument with the same flaw. A valid parallel is wrong for a flawed stimulus.
Overmatching quantifiers. "Most" and "all" are not interchangeable. If the stimulus uses "most," the parallel must use "most" (or an equivalent), not "all." Quantifier matching is precise.
Spending too much time on this question type. Parallel Reasoning questions require reading four to five full mini-arguments in the answer choices. If you are running low on time, make your best guess based on the conclusion filter and move on. Do not sacrifice multiple easier questions to solve one parallel reasoning question.
Exam Tips
Read the stimulus argument, abstract its structure, then write one sentence summarizing the form: "Two independent premises that are both universally quantified lead to a positive conclusion about a specific case." Use this description to evaluate answer choices.
On Parallel Flaw questions, name the flaw type in the stimulus before reading answer choices. Common parallel flaw types include: illegal reversal of a conditional, hasty generalization from an unrepresentative sample, false analogy, and confusing necessary with sufficient conditions.
The process of elimination is especially powerful here because wrong answer choices are usually wrong for one of the following reasons: wrong conclusion type, wrong quantifier strength, wrong argument structure, or valid argument used as a parallel for an invalid stimulus (or vice versa). Checking each criterion in order speeds up elimination.
Do not select an answer choice because its argument seems logically similar to the stimulus argument in spirit or because the two arguments feel equally compelling. Parallel reasoning is a formal matching task. Two arguments are parallel only if their logical structures are identical, not if they seem similar in strength, topic, or persuasiveness.
