The question stem, typically the final sentence or two of each item, directs the entire problem-solving approach. Read the question stem before reading the argument. This primes your attention: if you know you need to find a flaw, you will read the argument looking for logical errors rather than reading it neutrally. This directional reading saves time and improves accuracy.
Study Strategy
Master this unit early in LSAT preparation, ideally before drilling any other Logical Reasoning unit. Question stem recognition is the decision framework that determines which skills to apply. Without it, other skills cannot be deployed efficiently.
Study the 10 to 12 core question types in approximate frequency order: Strengthen, Weaken, Necessary Assumption, Flaw, Inference, Sufficient Assumption, Principle, Parallel Reasoning, Method of Reasoning, Main Point, Point at Issue, Paradox, Evaluate, and Role. Understand the key trigger language for each type.
Pay particular attention to closely related pairs that students confuse: (a) Necessary vs. Sufficient Assumption, (b) Weaken vs. Flaw, (c) Must Be True vs. Most Strongly Supported, (d) Method vs. Role. These pairs require careful discrimination.
Practice classifying question stems in isolation, without reading the attached stimuli, to build speed. Create flashcards with stem language on one side and question type on the other. Drill until classification is reflexive.
Group question types by their relationship to the stimulus: Argument-Based questions (Strengthen, Weaken, Assumption, Flaw, Method, Role, Evaluate, Principle-Apply) all require identifying the argument structure. Fact-Based questions (Must Be True, Most Strongly Supported, Cannot Be True, Complete) treat the stimulus as a set of facts. Matching questions (Point at Issue, Principle-Identify, Paradox) require matching relationships between the stimulus and answer choices.
Common Mistakes
Misidentifying EXCEPT stems. When a question says "all of the following EXCEPT" or "each of the following weakens EXCEPT," the correct answer is the one that does NOT have the stated property. Students often forget to invert their search, selecting an answer that does weaken when the question asks for the one that does not.
Confusing Weaken and Flaw. Flaw questions ask what is wrong with the argument as written; the answer describes a reasoning error in abstract terms. Weaken questions ask for new information that would damage the argument. If the answer brings in new facts, it is a Weaken answer. If the answer describes the logical structure of an error, it is a Flaw answer.
Treating Sufficient Assumption as Necessary Assumption. The correct answer to a Sufficient Assumption question is often a strong conditional statement that, if true, guarantees the conclusion. The correct answer to a Necessary Assumption question is modest: it must be true but does not need to be powerful enough to prove the conclusion alone.
Misreading "most" modifiers. "Most strengthens" means find the answer that helps most, not an answer that is merely relevant. "Most strongly supported" means find the best-supported answer, not the answer that is definitely true.
Ignoring question stem modifiers. Words like "if true," "were true," or "assuming it is true" instruct you to accept the answer choice as a fact and evaluate its impact. Missing these modifiers leads to evaluating answer choices for their real-world plausibility rather than their logical impact.
Exam Tips
Look for the verb in the question stem: "strengthens," "weakens," "assumes," "follows logically," "is flawed because." The verb usually reveals the question type immediately.
When a question stem is unusual or unfamiliar, fall back on the three-family framework: Is this asking me to evaluate an argument (Argument-Based)? Is this asking me to draw a conclusion from facts (Fact-Based)? Is this asking me to match, identify, or reconcile something (Matching)?
For time management, flag high-time-cost question types (Parallel Reasoning, Sufficient Assumption) for potential second-pass treatment if time is short. Reserve sufficient time for these by moving efficiently through Main Point and Role questions, which are typically faster.
Never start answering a question before classifying the stem. Students who read the argument and then jump to answers without processing the question stem often answer the question they expected rather than the one that was asked. Make stem classification the mandatory first step on every single question.
