Assumption Questions ask you to identify the unstated premises that an argument depends on. Every LSAT argument contains logical gaps between its stated premises and its conclusion. The gap exists because the author took something for granted without stating it explicitly. Assumptions are those unstated bridges. Identifying them is one of the highest-frequency skills on the LSAT, appearing in both Necessary Assumption and Sufficient Assumption question types, which together account for roughly 12 to 18 percent of all Logical Reasoning questions.

The Negation Test is the gold standard for verifying necessary assumptions. To apply it: negate the candidate answer choice (use logical opposite, not extreme opposite), then ask "Does negating this break the argument?" If yes, the assumption is necessary. If the negated version leaves the argument intact, the answer is wrong. The negation of "all" is "not all," not "none." The negation of "sometimes" is "never."
Study Strategy
Begin with the necessary vs. sufficient distinction. These two question types require different answer standards and different solving approaches. Necessary assumption answers are modest minimum requirements. Sufficient assumption answers are strong conditional statements that guarantee the conclusion. Confusing them is a high-frequency error.
Master the Negation Test early. Practice negating candidate answers correctly, paying special attention to quantifiers. Drill with 20 to 30 practice questions where you apply the Negation Test to every answer choice, not just the ones you are unsure about, until the test becomes automatic.
Study the common gap patterns as a taxonomy. When you can look at an argument and immediately recognize "this is a causal gap" or "this is a term-shift gap," assumption identification becomes a matching task rather than an open-ended search.
Work through the domain-specific assumption topics (assumption-in-scientific-arguments, assumption-in-statistical-arguments, assumption-in-moral-arguments, assumption-in-policy-arguments, assumption-in-analogy) because these appear repeatedly and each has predictable gap patterns.
Think of an argument's assumptions as the "invisible support beams" holding up the conclusion. The premises are the visible beams. Assumptions are the ones that were never installed but the structure pretends are there. Removing any beam (negating any necessary assumption) makes the structure collapse.
Common Mistakes
Using the Negation Test on sufficient assumption questions. The Negation Test is designed for necessary assumption questions. Applying it to sufficient assumptions produces incorrect results because sufficient assumptions are evaluated by whether they guarantee the conclusion, not by whether their negation destroys it.
Selecting overly broad assumptions. An assumption must fill the specific gap in the argument, not make a claim stronger than required. If the argument concludes "this policy will reduce crime in this city," the assumption should not claim the policy reduces crime everywhere. Overly broad answers often appeal to test-takers because they sound convincing, but they exceed what the argument actually requires.
Confusing assumptions with premises. Premises are stated in the argument. Assumptions are not stated. If you find yourself selecting an answer choice that simply repeats or closely paraphrases something already in the argument, you are selecting a premise, not an assumption.
Missing the logical gap. Students sometimes read an argument and accept it as reasonable without noticing the logical leap. Forcing yourself to ask "What does the author assume in moving from these premises to this conclusion?" prevents this. There is always a gap in LSAT arguments.
Selecting "strengthen" answers for necessary assumption questions. Some answer choices would strengthen the argument without being strictly required by it. A strengthener is not the same as a necessary assumption. The Negation Test distinguishes them: if the answer's negation merely weakens the argument without destroying it, the answer is a strengthener, not a necessary assumption.
Exam Tips
Before reading answer choices, identify the conclusion and list the stated premises. Then ask: "What is the argument taking for granted in going from these premises to this conclusion?" This pre-phrasing of the assumption narrows the field significantly.
For sufficient assumption questions, look for a conditional statement in the answer choices. The most reliable sufficient assumptions connect a premise term to the conclusion term with an "if-then" structure that leaves no logical gap.
On assumption-in-analogy questions, the core assumption is always that the two situations being compared are similar in the way that matters for the conclusion. The correct answer either states that the comparison holds or rules out a relevant difference between the two cases.
Do not select a necessary assumption answer that is more than the argument requires. If the conclusion is modest, the necessary assumption should be modest too. An argument concluding that "this medication may help" does not assume "this medication will definitely cure." Matching assumption strength to conclusion strength is essential.
