Always read the question stem before parsing the argument. Knowing whether you need to find the main point, an assumption, or a flaw changes which argument components you prioritize as you read.
Conclusion indicators worth memorizing: therefore, thus, so, consequently, hence, it follows that, this shows that, this demonstrates that, which means that, as a result.
Premise indicators worth memorizing: because, since, for, given that, after all, as evidenced by, for the reason that, in light of, seeing that, as shown by.
When no indicator words appear, identify the conclusion by asking "What is this passage ultimately trying to convince me of?" Then ask "What reasons are given to support that?" to locate the premises.
Study Strategy
Begin this unit with argument-parts, conclusions, and premises before moving to more nuanced topics like sub-conclusions, argument-scope, or argument-validity. The logical sequence is: (1) understand what an argument is; (2) learn to identify the conclusion and premises reliably; (3) understand how multiple premises relate to each other (independent vs. dependent); (4) learn to spot sub-conclusions; (5) study argument types (inductive, deductive, abductive, normative, predictive, causal, statistical); (6) practice argument mapping on real LSAT stimuli.
Flashcard drilling of indicator words is time well spent early in preparation. The ability to recognize a conclusion or premise within the first read reduces cognitive load for every question that follows.
For argument mapping, practice with a simple notation: underline the conclusion with a double line, single-underline premises, and circle sub-conclusions. Spend 30 seconds mapping an argument before answering practice questions until this becomes automatic.
Work through argument-soundness and argument-validity carefully, as students frequently confuse these. An argument can be valid (the conclusion follows from the premises) without being sound (valid plus all premises are true). The LSAT almost always presents structurally valid arguments with questionable premises or hidden assumptions.

Common Mistakes
Confusing position with function. Conclusions do not always appear last. LSAT arguments frequently begin with the conclusion and then provide premises. Relying on position leads to systematic errors across all question types.
Treating background information as a premise. Statements that establish context, define terms, or describe a situation do not provide logical support for the conclusion. Only statements that function as reasons to believe the conclusion are premises. Misidentifying background as a premise distorts assumption analysis.
Missing sub-conclusions. When an argument contains an intermediate claim that is both supported by evidence and used to support the main conclusion, students often treat it as either a premise or a main conclusion. Sub-conclusions are the most frequently missed structural element in complex arguments.
Conflating implicit assumptions with premises. Premises are stated. Assumptions are unstated. When an argument makes a logical leap, that leap represents an implicit assumption, not a premise. This distinction is central to assumption questions.
Overstating what "valid" means. A logically valid argument is one where the conclusion must be true if the premises are true. Validity says nothing about whether the premises actually are true. LSAT high scorers treat premises as given and focus on the logical relationship, not the real-world truth of the premises.
Confusing argument types. Normative arguments conclude with claims about what should be done or what is morally required. Descriptive arguments make factual claims. Predictive arguments project future outcomes. Mixing up these types creates confusion when evaluating whether a conclusion is warranted by the premises.
Exam Tips
Identify the conclusion in the first 10 seconds of reading any stimulus. Write a "C" next to it if working on paper. This single habit reduces errors across all question types because every subsequent task depends on knowing what the argument is trying to prove.
On Main Point questions, the correct answer is the conclusion reworded. Wrong answers typically describe a premise, a sub-conclusion, or an accurate-but-too-broad/too-narrow paraphrase of the conclusion. The "Why? So?" test efficiently eliminates wrong answers.
For complex arguments with multiple claims, map the support structure before attacking answer choices. The extra 15 seconds spent diagramming saves time during answer evaluation by preventing repeated rereads.
When evaluating conclusion strength, note whether the conclusion uses absolute language ("will always," "necessarily," "never") or hedged language ("likely," "may," "often"). Conclusions with absolute language are more vulnerable to counterexamples and weakening evidence.
Do not accept an answer choice that describes a different statement in the argument than the one the question asks about. Many wrong answers accurately describe the role or content of a premise when the question asks about the conclusion, or describe the conclusion when the question asks about a premise. Always anchor your analysis to the specific statement the question targets.
