Before reading answer choices, identify the flaw in your own words: "This argument is wrong because it..." Your description does not need to use LSAT vocabulary. Then look for the answer choice that most accurately captures what you identified. This pre-phrasing prevents you from being misled by answer choices that sound plausible but describe a different flaw.
Study Strategy
Study flaw categories as a taxonomy. Memorize the name, definition, structural signature, and typical LSAT answer choice language for each major flaw type. The test repeatedly uses the same 10 to 15 flaw types, so pattern recognition is the primary skill.

Describing what the argument says rather than what it does wrong. Flaw answer choices describe reasoning errors, not content summaries. An answer that says "the argument ignores economic factors" describes a potential objection; it does not describe the logical structure of the flaw. Flaw answers use language about logical operations: "treats," "assumes," "confuses," "infers," "fails to consider."
Selecting flaws that describe correct reasoning. Some wrong answer choices describe legitimate reasoning patterns, not flaws. Read answer choices carefully to confirm the described operation is actually wrong, not just unusual.
Selecting a flaw that applies to the wrong argument. In two-speaker stimuli, the flaw question may ask about one speaker's argument specifically. Students sometimes identify a flaw in the wrong speaker's reasoning.
Confusing the flaw with the assumption. The assumption is what the argument requires to be true. The flaw is what is logically wrong with the inference. Both point to the same gap, but their characterizations differ: assumptions are stated as claims that must be true, flaws are stated as descriptions of reasoning errors.
Selecting "straw man" incorrectly. A straw man flaw occurs when an argument mischaracterizes an opposing view and then attacks the mischaracterized version. This requires an explicitly present opposing view that the argument distorts. Applying "straw man" to arguments without an opposing view is an error.
Exam Tips
Look for keywords in flaw answer choices that signal common patterns: "assumes," "treats," "confuses," "infers," "fails to consider," "takes for granted," "overlooks the possibility." These verbs signal abstract descriptions of reasoning errors.
On questions with two or more plausible flaw descriptions, ask which one most precisely characterizes what went wrong. One flaw description is often accurate but too general; another may accurately describe the specific error in this argument. Choose the more specific and accurate description.
Answer choices that begin with "fails to consider" are often weakeners or objections, not flaw descriptions. A flaw is about what the argument does wrong structurally, not about what it ignores in terms of content.
Do not select an answer simply because it sounds like a logical problem. Every wrong answer choice in a flaw question sounds like something that could be a problem with some argument somewhere. The correct answer must accurately describe this specific argument's specific structural error. Test each answer choice against the actual argument: does this argument commit this specific reasoning error?
